Ronald McDonald House

Ronald McDonald House Charities® South Central Ontario is a non-profit organization that provides a home away from home for families of seriously ill children who are staying at a nearby partnering hospital. Today, there are 16 Houses across Canada that provide a place to stay for tens of thousands of Canadian families each year, and accommodate families every night.

The Ronald McDonald House division of Smiling Over Sickness was established back in 2010, and is made up of 12 student volunteers dedicated not only to providing enjoyable activities for the children staying at McMaster Children's Hospital and their families, but who also help to maintain the quality and safety of the Ronald McDonald House facilities. Our volunteering program at the Ronald McDonald House comprises two main activities: Individual volunteering and fundraising initiatives. Volunteers are expected to take part in all activities, and must attend at least two 2-hour shifts per month, our biweekly 1 hour team meetings, as well as help with the special events when applicable. If you are interested in keeping up to date with our latest initiatives, be sure to follow us on our Instagram page.

Fundraising

We aim to conduct 3-4 fundraisers during the school year to support the Ronald McDonald House. Fundraising for Ronald McDonald House (RMH) is crucial because it directly supports families with seriously ill or injured children by providing them with a place to stay close to the hospital. These funds help cover the costs of accommodations, meals, and family-centered services, all of which reduce financial burdens for families during difficult times. Additionally, fundraising ensures that RMH can maintain and expand its facilities, enhancing the overall experience for families. Through community support and donations, RMH can continue offering a home-away-from-home, helping families stay together and focus on their child’s recovery.

Dinner & Breakfast service

At RMHSCO, volunteers assist in preparing and serving meals during breakfast and dinner shifts, helping to provide nutritious food for families staying at the house. Breakfast shifts ensure families start their day with a meal, while dinner shifts offer comfort after long days at the hospital. These efforts reduce financial and emotional stress for families, allowing them to focus on their child's care. The meals also create a sense of community, supporting RMHSCO’s mission to offer a "home away from home."

Family Room Support

Volunteers in the family room at RMHSCO (Ronald McDonald House South Central Ontario) provide support to families staying at the hospital. They greet families, ensure the space is clean and organized, and offer a welcoming, comfortable environment. Volunteers also restock supplies, prepare snacks or refreshments, and engage with families, offering a compassionate presence during stressful times. Their role helps create a relaxing space for families to recharge while staying close to their hospitalized children.
